How to Write Great OKRs

Writing Objectives

  • Make them qualitative and inspiring
  • Start with action verbs (Increase, Build, Launch)
  • Keep them concise (one sentence)
  • Ensure they are ambitious but achievable

Writing Key Results

  • Make them quantitative and measurable
  • Define outcomes, not activities
  • Include a starting point and target
  • Ensure they are within your control

Common Traps

  • Writing tasks instead of outcomes
  • Setting too many OKRs per quarter
  • Not reviewing or updating regularly
  • Using OKRs as a to-do list

Implementation Tips

  • Start with one team before rolling out widely
  • Allow 2-3 quarters to build the muscle
  • Make OKRs visible and transparent
  • Celebrate learning, not just achievement
